Are you confused, wondering which Bissell ProHeat 2X deep cleaner is the best…
There are minor differences between the basic ProHeat 2X, the CleanShot, and the Select and Select Pet. Use and operation of each cleaner is basically the same – it’s the bells and whistles that come with each that you should look at when making a decision.
The CleanShot (Model #9500) is currently the most expensive in this line, with a suggested retail price of $329.99. It comes with the exclusive CleanShot technology, providing an extra dose of cleaning power at the touch of a button. It also has the exclusive DryAir feature, which provides heated air for quicker carpet drying times. Find out more about the Bissell ProHeat 2X CleanShot…
The Select (Model #9400) retails for $269.99. It includes Microban protection, which protects the cleaner against product deterioration, odors, and stains caused by bacteria, mold, and mildew. It also comes equipped with a twelve row Dual Dirtlifter Powerbrush, as well as several tools, including one for cleaning bare floors. Learn more about the Bissell ProHeat 2X Select 9400…
The Select Pet is very similar to Model #9400 above, except the included cleaning solutions are more suited for pet owners. There are two different models of this carpet cleaner. We prefer the Black Infusion Model #9400-4 over the Green Model #9400-3, because it has Microban protection, yet retails for the same amount of $269.99. Finally, the basic ProHeat 2X is the least expensive unit in this category, retailing for $229.99. There are two different models in this category – the Blue Illusion model 9200, and the titanium-colored 9200-T. Both come with 10 rows of PowerLifter Dirtbrushes and a 3 inch tough stain tool. However, we recommend going with the 9200-T model, because you receive the bare floor tool. Find out more about the Bissell 9200…
Features of the Bissell ProHeat 2X Series
All ProHeat 2X deep cleaner models have a built-in heater. Hot tap water should still be added to the carpet cleaner, but the heater will warm the water by another 25 degrees, not to exceed 190 degrees. For deep cleaning delicate materials, such as wool or oriental rugs, the switch located on the front of each machine is used to turn off the built-in heater.
The Bissell ProHeat uprights use Dual DirtLifter PowerBrushes for lifting dirt out of carpet fibers. Although all models use this type of floor brush, the number of rows of brushes included on each model varies. The PowerBrushes utilize a floating suspension that self-adjusts to different carpet heights.
The carpet cleaners have a 2-in-1 one gallon water tank that is mounted on the base of each unit. A heavy duty bladder inside the water tank holds the clean water. As the clean water in the bladder empties, it mixes with the cleaning formula, which is held in a separate container. Dirty water that is pulled back into the machine will collect around the outside of the bladder, staying separate from the clean water. The dirty water is emptied by pouring it out of the triangular-shaped opening in the back of the 2-in-1 water tank.
As mentioned before, the cleaning formula is automatically mixed with the hot tap water. Four settings control how much formula is mixed with the water – heavy traffic, normal clean, light clean, and water rinse. The cleaning solution may be left in the carpet cleaner during storage.
Some models of the Bissell ProHeat 2X upright series also have Microban protection. Although this protection will not have any direct effect on the machine’s cleaning capabilies, it does protect the carpet cleaners against bacteria, mold, and mildew, which can cause product deterioration, odors and stains.
Although the tools included with each ProHeat 2X model vary, the hose for cleaning upholstery, stairs, and other similar surfaces is already conveniently installed. To switch from floor cleaning to tools, use the ReadyTools dial. Simply turn the knob to “TOOLS” and attach the cleaning tool to the flexible hose. When finished, turn the knob back to “FLOOR CLEANING”.
Bissell also offers a line of Scotchgard cleaning solutions, which means you can use your ProHeat carpet cleaner on new carpeting, while still maintaining the 5-year limited stain warranty from 3M. Review your warranty first – however, in most cases you will not void it if you clean your carpets using Bissell cleaning solutions with Scotchgard protector every twelve months.
Use and Operation
Operation of the Bissell Pro Heat 2X series is fairly straightforward. For clean strokes, press the trigger and make one slow forward wet pass and one slow backward wet pass. To dry, release the trigger and make slow forward and backward passes until water is no longer being pulled up from the flooring surface. To rinse, repeat this entire process, except first turn the Custom Clean dial to rinse.
The process for cleaning bare floors is very similar to cleaning carpets. First attach the hard floor tool to the bottom of the machine by hooking it into the nozzle. Set the ReadyTools dial to floor cleaning, then set the Custom Clean dial to normal clean. Move the cleaner forward and back while depressing the trigger. To squeegee and suction up dirty water, move the machine forward and back without pressing the trigger. It is important to note that not all Bissell ProHeat 2X models come with the hard floor tool.
The flexible hose that is attached to the cleaner unit can be used for cleaning upholstery, stairs, and automobiles. Attach the cleaning tool to the hose. Set the ReadyTools dial to the hose attachments setting to allow spray and suction from the hose. The Custom Clean dial also works with the hose, and can by set to heavy traffic, normal clean, light clean or water rinse. Press the trigger on the selected to spray solution, and slowly move the tool back and forth. Release the trigger to suction dirty water. Different Bissell ProHeat 2X models have different tools.
Our Bissell Pro Heat 2X Review
Let’s first start with what we like about the Bissell ProHeat 2X models:
- Heated water (25 degrees warmer!), which results in cleaner flooring surfaces in less time. We like that there is an option to turn off the heating unit too.
- The hose and hand tools can be used with merely the flip of a switch, and they do a decent job.
- The cleaning solution is mixed as it is being used, so there is no waste, and no refill of the clean water tank is needed to rinse.
- Brushes do a good job of “grooming” carpeted surfaces, leaving them soft to the touch.
And now for the suggested improvements…
- We would like it if the 2-in-1 water tank was slightly bigger, to avoid frequent trips to the sink for emptying and refilling. It is also difficult to tell when the clean water tank is empty. The CleanShot is the one exception, because it has a flow gauge that stops spinning when the clean water tank or the cleaning solution is empty. We anticipate that this useful feature will be added to future ProHeat 2X models.
- Suctioning could be better. However, we did find that it noticeably improved when the heating element was turned off.
- Cleaning up the machine when finished took some time, because there were different parts (the nozzle and brushes) that are held in place with screws.

the solution doesnt work .. it wont come out of the tube
Hi Logan, Have you contacted Bissell’s customer support department to see if they have any advice regarding your problem? Their telephone number is (800) 237-7691.
We have had this cleaner for 2 years and we have to repair it almost after every use. We use it in only 2 rooms about every 2-3 months. I had to buy another unit off of Craigslist just so I can have a spare set of parts ready…. It does a decent job cleaning when it works. Over all I would not recommend this unit to anyone.
I agree! I have had my Bissell cleaner less than a year and used it once. I recently moved into a home and needed to clean the rental carpet. Way to go Bissell! I was charged by the landlord to clean the carpet because your machine would not spray the cleaner or water so that I could clean the carpet. I went online and did everything that was suggested to clear the jets, etc and it still wouldnt spray. I spent almost $300 for this machine! Maybe I am old fashioned but I really expected to be able to use this machine for at least 3 to 5 years before having to have it serviced.
Or I guess you would have expected me to get a rental from a local store, while my Bissell took a vacation in the closet!!!
I can’t get the shampoo or water to come out. Help–I can’t find my owners manuel.
We now have THREE useless Bissell carpet washers. The last one is about 3 months old and the belt broke and for whatever reason, the liquid/cleaner will not work. The machine before this one was about 1.5 years old and it stopped sucking up fluid but did put it down. The first Bissell carpet cleaner we bought was about 4 years ago and it stopped sucking the fluid/cleanser back up as well. We do use these machines more often than a normal, prob about several times a month, BUT, for heaven’s sake, the machines should hold up past 3 months. No more Bissell carpet cleaners or vacs for us. Three dead, worthless Bissell carpet cleaners now have to go to the dump because we can not get parts or fix them. Something wrong here.
We have the 9200 and the soap will not spray. If we try to spray the soap then the water stops spraying out. We have to turn it off and then turn it back on to get the water to flow.
The unit was just over 2 years and we used it 5-6 times.
I agree with the statements above… The Bissell cleaners are poorly designed, and fall apart quickly.
I have had 2 Bissell ProHeat steam cleaners, and both malfunctioned within 1 year of purchase- not spraying, no suction, etc. I will not purchase another Bissell product.
what junk bissel makes 2 pro heat 2X just JUNK
I made the same experience with Bissell ProHeat 2x 9300-1. I am on my third model, Costco swapped out the first, Bissell the second. All have the same problem. After the first use and a couple of weeks or so sitting idel they won’t spray anymore. This is clearly a design issue and Bissell clearly does not care. Their machines can be considered disposable, use once and throw away!
Wow, I am stunned at that negative reviews of your Bissell steam cleaners. I have had the ProHeat 2x for 2+ years and bought it because we have a dog that, no matter how well you clean his paws, he brings stuff in from outside. Not to mention the vomiting every so often. Going #1 and #2 is not a problem for us. But this steamer has worked fantastically since Day1. It has never broken down, it has never stopped working, it has never stopped spraying out super heated water or soap solution and it has always had great suction. Within a day, maybe 2, my carpets are dry. The added benefit for me is that no vacuum can get up all the dog hair. After vacuuming, my PH2x get all the dog hair up out of the carpets.
One con: it works so well, it causes me to want to use it too often.
)
Hi – above I read twelve negative reports on the ProHeat 2x, and then only one for positive. Could you enlighten me regarding this.
Thank you
Anita Hansen
When is the new ProHeat model expected to be available?
I just bought the ProHeat2XPet yesterday. This is the first cleaner I have ever owned. It worked great! I wish I had of bought it 5 years ago before I paid $200 twice a year to have my carpets cleaned. It looks as good as when they did it. We will see what happens next time I go to use it. First time is a charm! Of course, being a woman, I would change a few design flaws, but other than that I like it so far. My house smells great! Good Luck! PS make sure when you screw the cap on the cleaning solution tank that the insert is in the correct position otherwise it will leak..leasons.
I forgot to mention, the last time I had the Professionals do it, they put so much cleaning and deodorizing solution on the carpet that my small dog had a breathing attack and I had to take him to the vet another $300.00 later, as well as the carpet remaining kinda sticky. At least this way I can control what and how much goes on my floor. It feels better already. I think it is VERY important to read the instructions and CLEAN the unit after each use, even though it requires a screw driver and additional time. I am amazed how much dirt and debris it cleaned and that is after vacuuming with a Rainbow. I had to order the extra hard floor tool (they should include it) and can’t wait to get it to do my tile floors. It does seem to use a lot of cleaning solution, but how much it too much compared to what professional charge. I heard vinegar and water in the solution tank works well for hard floors, haven’t tried it yet, but will.
i’m on my second proheat 2x. its been dead for about a year. the first one quit after 3 uses in 5 months. bissell had me take it in to a local shop for repairs. a month later the shop couldnt figure it out so bissell replaced it with a remanufactured unit which also stopped spraying water after the 2nd month and 3rd use. unfortunately its out of warranty and bissell has no help to offer except to recommend i take it in to the one local shop that couldnt fix it. poorly built? i’d say!
Third year I have had my 2X. It now wont pull the solution back out of the carpet. Had to go and get my old Hoover to finish the job. Never liked the 2X. Rinse wayer container is too small, and surrounded by the drity water. Makes it a pain to clean, and to get the suction nozzles clean, 1/2 day with a screw driver, losing screws. Will not buy another Bissell product after this fiasco.
I am amazed at the negative experiences with the Bissell ProHeat 2X. We have had ours for 3 years, used less than 10 times. I cleans beautifully when it works, but like most, it does not spray water or solution, or it sprays sporadically. This is really irritating since it was not a cheap machine. I have also tried to contact Bissell with little assistance and there is no one within three hours of our community that will service it. We do have hard water and someone recommended running vinegar through it, which I am going to try next. But I know that I will never purchase a Bissell again. The plastic handle and clips on the hand tool cover have broken and the machine is difficult to clean.
Add another vote for Bissell ProHeat 2X “bought it, used it, then: no suction.” I guess I will have to either pay to have it repaired, or give it away, or throw it away. BUYER BEWARE!
Many of the Hoover carpet cleaners boast a might 12 amp motor but I can not find comparable information on the Bissell cleaners. It makes it difficult to compare.
I really believe that the few positive comments that are on here were put here by Bissell’s marketing department. They actually have folks that scan these kinds of comment sites and add possitive remarks.
We have had nothing but problems with our Bissell Proheat….doesn’t spary out onto the carpet but the uphostery attachment works fine. My husband has taken it apart and we cannot find a clog. Sad, Even American made companies are now making garbage….through it was probably manufactured in China.
I would not recommend one to anyone.
Bissell 9200 2X is garbage. Well, let me take that back, it did work a few times. Now it will not spray water or solution. Took it apart to the best of my ability, but could not find problem.
I would not recommend this thing.
I was just trying to use mine that I’ve had for over 2 years and right in the middle of cleaning, the stupid thing is shorting out!!!! Frustrating, but sounds like we’ve had better luck with ours than others. I will not be purchasing another Bissell and will go back to what I grew up with, Hoover!
I am on my third Bissell Proheat 2X in less than a year. They usually work the first time I clean the carpet and then stop suctioning dirty water out of the carpet. Then the carpet takes 2-3 days to dry with a fan on it. The tool attachment works fine and I finally resorted to cleaning my entire living room carpet with the hand-tool attachement. It took three days but how else am I supposed to get clean carpet. Bissell has sent me two “remanufactured” replacements but they have the same issue. While cleaning my carpet on my hands and knees with the attachment, this unit poured out two entire tanks of cleaning solution in one spot two different times. I will never buy a Bissell again and this is due to their very poor customer service. They will not issue a refund. They will just keep sending you “remanufactured” units as a replacement. They informed me the last time I talked to them, that they will inspect the unit I send back and if THEY find it to be okay, THEY will just send that same unit back to me. I don’t know how long I am supposed to let this go on. It will be a year in July, since I bought the first defective unit, and I am tired of the whole mess.
We have a bissell proheat 2X select carpet steamer and have only used it about 6 times at the most. Today it won’t spray out water, but if I switch it to hose, it will work. I will not pay $299 for a machine and then have to get down on my knees and clean the carpet by hand. I called customer service and they told my a couple of things to try, which did not work. I called them back and they said to take to nearest service center(which is about 2 hours away) and pay to have it fixed.
I would not recommend this cleaner to anyone, unless they have lots of money to throw away.
Very unhappy here!
i bought a bissel proheat 2x used it twice and now it wont spray water or solution so now im stuck with a piece of junk and oyt alomsy
t $300 the company should be responsible for fixing or replaceing them not us
I completely regret buying the Bissell Pro Heat 2X. It worked great at first. My carpets were really clean and everything was wonderful and worked perfectly. It heated the water, scrubbed the carpet and sucked up a lot of the dirty water. I was so excited but then the water stopped spraying after a few months and the brushes only work sporadically. This is the 3rd Bissell I have owned and they each have been tossed for the same reason…the water stops spraying! I am so frustrated and out a lot of money and now stuck with dirty carpets before my daughter’s birthday party (I’m thrilled). I do not have enough money to buy a new cleaner now and I will NEVER purchase a Bissell carpet cleaner again. I guess it took me 3 times to learn. I was googling information for trouble shooting and came across this sight. Unfortunately when researching the lack of water/solution spraying, I found numerous complaints about the same thing!
I believe that this is a lemon and should be completely recalled. After reading all of the comments, I see that we all have the same problems. It wont spray to the floor. Bissell you should repair these for free or replace them. I have only used mine maybe 5 times and the last 3 times I had to use the hand tool. I will make a claim with Better Business Bureau and also talk to a friend that is an attorney and will represent all the people the people here that have had problems. You can contact me within 72 hours or I will move forward. Thanks.
Melinda
I am on my third. All three same issue. They stop sucking up the water. Rite now I have a ton of solution on my carpet and no way to get it off. Last time they get my money. They make good tile steamers. That is it . STAY AWAY from the carpet cleaners. I will not buy one again. Amazing how all three died in a couple weeks after the warranty. Give me a break!!!
I wish I had read this page before we bought our Bissel Proheat 2x (model 9400-4). Today I tried to use it for the third time and it won’t spray out water or solution. Our old Hoover worked for 5 years. I haven’t yet tried what I read on another web site:

If I may! In most cases the heater is clogged. It might be clogged with soap that has harden over time. You need to take the handle apart. You will see a metal box(thats the heater) besides the wires there are two tubes connected to the heater. remove the tubes but label or watch which tube goes where. now turn the heater upside down. there are 6 screws on the side and 1 in the middle. remove them carefully. the 6 on the side have a small gaskets under them..you don’t want to lose them. the 1 in the middle has no gasket, now the bottom plate of the heater can be taken off (there is a gasket with that plate …be careful . you will now see the long channels inside the heater and need to clean it. the holes where the tubes where connected have to be clean also but carefully. the metal is soft.so it bends. now put it all back. hope this helps. if you want to keep this from happening.the best way is to run clear water after you are done.this will remove any soap in the machine which will harden after the machine drys out. hope I helped .
I bought a 9200 2x Proheat about a year ago.I have nothing but problems with it.I have replaced the belts 3 times, solution pump, brush motor and the nozzles. Now the brush gear is bad.I use it once a month.I will not buy another Bissell.
I will not buy another. Before I could use it a second time I had to take the thing apart to get it to work. Now I’m trying to use it again and the same thing is happening. What a waste of time and of money. WORST PRODUCT EVER!
Same problem.
I just bought the Bissell Pro-Heat 2x 9200-T and it works like a DREAM!!!!! I posted pictures on my facebook where I cleaned and had not, my carpets looks great. I love it so far and hope it doesn’t poop out on me!
Wish I would have seen this website before I bought my 2nd Pro-Heat. Just a year old and have had it at the repair place 3 times and it’s broken again today. Of course, it’s just out of warranty. I concur with all the comments and might add that the service place I took it to kept telling me not to by another Bissell because they break all the time.
No water!!! I called the phone number listed ((800) 237-7691 ) and PRESS 3 for customer service and it hung up on me. No water, no service. I think they should include a warning “1st time it will work, after that OH WELL!”.
Had mine for 2 years…Used it twice. Now it won’t spray out the bottom. The handle works fine, but the bottom only sucks, doesn’t spray. Don’t buy this product, you will get b!tched at by your significant other when it won’t run!!
Bissell…Stinks… I can’t believe I feel for it. Same thing as everyone else…won’t spray..and dumps the soap onto the carpet. 300 bucks down the tubes.
NEVER AGAIN
i have a bissell pro heat pet and it is my second one cuz the first didnt have all the parts in it and the second one the brush clips broke after the third use and cant return it to wal mart cuz it is more than 6 months old……it worked great at first but now it sucks….will never buy another one
I have had my Bissell ProHeat (model 8910) for 5 years now and I love it. It gets used at least 4-5 times each year…maybe more. Between my toddler and 2 dogs, it gets plenty of opportunity for use. We’ve never had any trouble out of it. Maybe it’s because it’s an older model. All the newer ones sound like crap. It’s even taken quite a beating with all the dog hair that goes in it. It removes dog hair much better than my vacuum. I would buy it again any day…not so sure I would be able to say the same for a newer model.
My first Bissell ProHeat had the tank handle crack in half after it’s 3rd use; dissapointing but didn’t change its ability to clean. A few more uses later and it stopped spraying water. I read online that you may need to manually “prime” the pump by placing your hand over the vacuum intake while the water tank is in place. This worked a few times but eventually nothing I did could bring this back to life. I bought a new one and this time saved the box. Needless to say this unit experienced the same exact problem of not spraying around the same 3mo time frame. I packed it up, took it back to the store and got a refund.
TL;DR — Buyer beware, these are poorly made. Look to other brands.
i have the pro heat 2x. mine has also done the same thing most people here are complaining about.
it will now not spray the solution out. it will suck up but not spray the water. this thing is junk! i will never buy another bissell again.
Well, I’m not the man, I’m not Bissell and I am not affiliated with anyone except myself.
Look, I bought my Bissell 9200 years ago and it has been a real solid machine. I have a dog, a great dog but he is a dog and brings in a lot of debris and dirt. I’d say i use mine around 6 times a year and it is great. No problems and paid for itself within the first year.
The only gripe i have is how expensive the bissell formulas are but I usually buy mine from Home Depot
Sorry guys I guess I got the lemon huh?!
I’ve had my Bissell about 2 years now, haven’t used it much in the last year. It worked great the first year, except for one time I didn’t have the suction pieces lined up, fixed it and it worked great again. I just used it yesterday and a few months back, and it doesn’t have the suction it used to, and takes a couple days to dry rather than the few hours it used to take. I’m pretty disappointed as it did a great job prior to this, but now sucks up a third of the water it used to. What a waste of $$
I’ve had the PHXX for a couple of years. It replaced the older model that worked wonderfully for 3 years and no problems. The new machine is a dream. Cleans well, no problems …. IF YOU CLEAN IT PROPERLY when you are finished. But then again I hate oreck vacuums and love Rainbow vacuums because I like things that work. So, those with problems I suggest you CLEAN your machine after you use it. I have 3 large indoor dogs and white carpet – so the machine gets a LOT of use. I have never used the Bissel cleaning solution – I use several different carpet cleaners. So the machines are not junk. If you are unhappy with this machine, you probably aren’t happy with any product you buy.
I would have to conquer with all the other posts, My proheat will ASLO not put water down in the floor. Absolutely gutted and feel thoroughly cheated to pay so much for a piece of sh!t that won’t work!!!
Grrr
Well I have a cemetary for Bissel’s Pro Heat Pet steamers in my basement. This last one is a 9200 and only 1 year old. It has leaked since day one but steam cleaning a rug no big deal with excess water. This last one will now only spray with the hand unit. I have wasted a sunday performing maintenance on the device and after cheking each hose and making sure air could pass. I will now be looking for a new device and it will not be a Bissel……………..
I was stoked to go buy a Bissell Pet Pro Heat.
But with all the same problems that are mentioned above, I am now going to look for a different brand.
I was just on the verge of buying this unit, glad I found this site. I will be looking at the Hoover.
Thanks for stopping me from making a big mistake.
