How Effective is the Bissell Steam Mop?

The Bissell Steam Mop is a favorite of anyone who wants to have squeaky clean floors without the back-breaking hassle of scrubbing by hand. This model is eco-friendly, using no chemicals and coming equipped with machine-washable, reusable microfiber pads.

It’s one of our favorites for hard floor cleaning here at Steam Cleaner Reviews. Here’s why…

Easy and Economical to Use

The Bissell Steam Mop uses no chemicals. Instead, it uses water, in the form of steam, to clean floors. Once the water is heated, the ready light on the mop will glow, indicating that the water has been converted to steam and that the mop is ready to use. The steam is released with the pull of the trigger located on the underside of the handle. One tank of water will clean for approximately fifteen minutes.

The Steam Mop uses machine washable reusable microfiber pads that easily attach to the 360-degree swivel head. The mop is packaged with two of these pads, and additional replacements can also be purchased. A two pack of replacement pads retails for $19.99.

It should be noted that older models of this steam mop used terry cloth pads. Although these terry cloth pads do an excellent job on floors, they were prone to shrinking. The microfiber pads that come with the current 1867-7 model are more shrink-resistant.

Safe to Use on Several Hard Floor Surfaces

Of course, you will want to heed the flooring manufacturer’s specifications, but generally speaking, the Bissell 1867 Steam Mop can be used on:

  • vinyl
  • laminate
  • linoleum
  • sealed hardwood floors
  • marble
  • ceramic
  • stone

An add-on carpet refresher attachment is available. The suggested retail price for this attachment is $24.99. It is intended for refreshing and deodorizing carpeted surfaces, not for deep cleaning.

Caring for Your Bissell Steam Mop

The Bissell 1867 will need a little TLC to keep it in tip top shape.

As mentioned earlier, the mop uses microfiber pads. After use, the pad should be removed and thrown in the wash.

Second, the mop has a replaceable filter that protects the heater and pump from water impurities. Occasionally, this filter will need to be changed. Keep an eye on the beads in the filter. When they change color, this indicates that the filter needs changed. Consider using distilled water instead of tap if you have hard water or if you want to extend the life of the filter.

Our Bissell Steam Mop Review…

There is a lot to like about this model:

  • The Bissell 1867 effectively cleans floors without the use of harsh chemical cleaners, which are not only expensive, but can be harmful to humans and pets.
  • The mop is both compact and lightweight, weighing less than ten pounds.
  • The machine takes very little effort to operate. In addition, the 360-degree swivel head does a great job getting to hard to reach nooks and crannies.
  • The microfiber cleaning pads are sturdy, reusable and machine washable.
  • The mop heats up quickly.
  • The unit operates quietly.
  • With a suggested retail price of $99.99, the mop is budget-friendly.

Although the Bissell Steam Mop is an excellent choice, there are a couple of features that could be improved. First, the cord is too short, although this problem is easily remedied with the use of an extension cord. Also, the trigger can be tiring to engage if the mop is used for an extended period of time. The unit does a good job cleaning floors. However, to disinfect them, it must be left in place 15 seconds. Areas cleaned with the mop must be vacuumed or swept prior to cleaning.

Overall, the advantages of this model far outweigh the disadvantages. The Bissell Steam Cleaner is an effective, environmentally-friendly floor cleaner that is worth every penny.

Thanks for this website. I purchased this model from HSN after reading your reviews and it is everything you say it is. I love it!! We recently bought a circa 1920 farmhouse and have not gotten around to remodeling the floors yet..so this is a wonderful tool. I have cats and a dog and a house bunny so I am obsessed with keeping my floors clean. Thanks again for having this website. It is very helpful. PS. I also bought the Bissell Pro-Dry Power roller carpet cleaner at the same time. It is super easy to use and clean and does a great job.

We bought this product through QVC and used it about 4 times. The last time we used it the ready light kept shutting off. By the next use it wouldn’t heat up at all. It was under warranty so we were told to take it to a local repair shop. The shop is about 45 mins away and because my wife is disabled it was hard with a child in school, etc. to get to this repair shop within working hours. So long story short, our warranty ran out and we never got it repaired. My bad, but it should have lasted longer than a few uses and what a hassle to return it or get it repaired. I am wanting to make things easy for my wife, so I will buy another one, but am afraid to try another Bissell.

PS Sorry we purchased our Bissell through HSN. I would recommend buying it at a local department store for easy return.
