The Platinum carpet cleaner uses new MaxExtract technology to get carpeted surfaces squeaky clean. Here is Hoover’s description of this new technology:
“MaxExtract Technology features the most advanced combination of multi-action agitation, carpet washing, dirt removal and direct heat drying – to provide the look of professionally groomed carpet that you can live on within hours of cleaning.”
Attacking dirt from every angle is not the only thing this machine can do. It has a few more bells and whistles…
The machine uses a two tank system. The dirty water recovery tank sits on the base of the machine. The clean water tank is separate. The Hoover F8100-900 has a tank status indicator light. The appropriate tank status light will blink when one of the following occurs:
- the clean water tank is empty
- the detergent tank is empty
- the dirty water recovery tank is full
When the dirty water recovery tank is full, the cleaner will no longer dispense liquid. This ensures that the carpet does not become oversaturated.
The carpet cleaner has a surface selector button. When “Carpet” is selected, the machine is ready for deep cleaning of wall to wall carpeting. When “Rug” is selected, the machine can be used for shampooing throw rugs, area rugs and delicate carpeted surfaces.
The Hoover F8100-900 has a handy AutoRinse feature. Here’s how it works:
First, turn the cleaning mode selector dial to “Wash/AutoRinse”. The carpet cleaner will run a wash cycle when the solution trigger is held and the machine is pushed forward. It will automatically switch to a rinse cycle when the trigger is held and the machine is pulled back. To sum it up, push forward to wash, pull back to rinse. No need to mess with any switches or to change water.
For dry cycles, release the trigger and push and pull the machine forward and back. Sounds pretty easy, huh?
There are a few other cleaning modes that can be selected:
SpotClean: Turn the cleaning mode selector dial to “SpotClean”. Using the bright LED spotlight as a guide, aim the spot sprayer at the problem area and pull the solution trigger. The spray pattern of the SpotClean sprayer can be easily adjusted. Turn the srayer right for a narrow spray, good for focusing on smaller areas. Turn it left for a wider spray, useful for treating high traffic areas and larger stains.
Rinse Only Function: As handy as the AutoRinse feature is, there will be times when you want to do an extra rinse. Hoover took this into consideration when they designed their Platinum carpet cleaner. By turning the cleaning mode selector dial to “Rinse Only”, the machine will release only water when the solution trigger is depressed and the unit is moved forward and back.
Spill Pick-Up Mode: By turning the cleaning mode selector dial to “Spill Pick-Up”, only the suction of the machine is activated. Place the cleaner over the spill until liquid is no longer seen moving through the recovery nozzle.
The Hoover F8100-900 can also be used for cleaning stairs, upholstery and other small areas. The machine includes a 96 inch super stretch hose, as well as a SpinScrub powered hand tool, an upholstery tool, and a crevice tool. The hose and tools are ready to go at a moment’s notice. Simply remove the hose from the hose pocket, slide the desired tool onto the hose, make sure the handle of the cleaner is in the upright position, and you are ready to go. The tools will operate in every mode except for the Spot Clean mode.

From Hoover F8100-900 Platinum, Return to Carpet Cleaner Review

I have had a higher end Hoover hot water extractor for many years now that I have used extensively but it recently died. I needed to get a new cleaner and was in the process of doing research when cleaning vomit became an issue. I decided to get the Hoover Platinum because reviews consistently said that it cleaned amazingly well and outperformed professional cleaners. I am a bit skeptical about these types of claims, but given the urgency of the situation I decided to give it a try. I have to say, that it performed up to the expectation of the reviews and the price. It is heavy, (of course my old one was heavy too and the new one outperforms it so dramatically it makes it worth it…) Also the plastic is concerning because it seems somewhat flimsy (though admittedly the clear plastic is nice because you can easily see fluid levels… It is relatively easy to clean (particularly compared to the old one) though it would be nice if the roller were as easy to pop out as the spin scrub brush. Overall, if you are very vested in keeping your carpets/rugs clean (and they say that dirt is the chief thing that breaks down carpet fibers…), then I would say it is a worthwhile investment. We were fortunate because we were able to take advantage of a labor day sale at Best Buy and got it for $339.99 instead of the $400 list. (Be sure to check and reference the internet site if you go to the store and it’s not marked down in the store as it was in our case.) Also, not using Hoover’s cleaning solution voids the warranty because other brands oversuds and cause it to leak, etc. Hoover themselves recommends either the Platinum or the Ultra (which is cheaper). I just ordered the Pet formula, because when you need a heavy duty cleaner, you need it.
When this machine works, it works wonderful. Gets so much dirt out and leaves the carpet feeling soft and clean. We had to return the first one that we bought because we had issues with the spin brushes staying in. Now the one that they replaced it with, neither of the brushes will spin. I had so much hope for this machine and am now very disappointed because I clean my carpets all the time having 3 pets and a toddler. I would be interested if anyone else is having these issues or has any suggestions.
Be careful of JBrocks review…it’s the exact same one at Best Buy under a different name:

This machine is incredible. Cleans carpet thoroughly. I love not having to mix cleaner with the hot water. Machine maintains the hot water during cleaning. Excellent scrubbing, best extraction I have ever seen. Carpets are already dry after 4 hours. Also very nice and easy to clean machine.
HOOVER VS RUG DOCTOR-NO CONTEST!!!
Okay, so I bought the Rug Doctor professional carpet cleaner-yeah, the huge one about two months ago. After trying it once, I wasn’t completely satisfied-it left the carpet pretty wet and took over 24 hours to dry! So, after reading the reviews for the Hoover Platinum, I decided to buy one. I just finished shampooing with it. WOW! I can’t believe how dry the carpet is! After shampooing our master and the hallway, I moved to the family room. By the time I finished the family room, the master was nearly dry! We don’t wear shoes in our house and clean or have the carpet cleaned about every six months. The water out of the Hoover was black!!! I had just shampooed the carpet in the family room two weeks ago with the Rug Doctor so decided to go over it with the Hoover to see if I could get any dirt out. The water in the Hoover was just as dirty as the rest of the house! Don’t waste your money on the Rug Doctor-this works way better. And it comes with a 6 year warranty!
This Hoover is the closest we have come to the clean you can achieve with a commercial, truck-mounted machine. I have used a commercial rig to clean restaurants and homes, and the commercial rig is definitely hard to beat with super hot water and great suction. The problem is that the commercial machine isn’t readily available for me to borrow anymore, hiring it done is expensive, and we don’t like the disruption of doing the entire house all at once. Having our own machine makes sense. The Hoover is clearly a winner over any of the rentals we have tried, too. Our only complaint is we wish it had larger tanks for fresh water and waste water.
I just bought a new platinum carpet cleaner. It came with a small screen in the bag with the screws. Where does the screen go???
I bought mine from Kohls online. It was close to $400, but when I got 10% off because Kohls took that off, free shipping except for $5.00, and another 20% off when I searched online for a kohls coupon code, I ended up getting it for somewhere in the range of $255.00.
That was shipping, and taxes added to it. I think I did well:-)
I just need help figuring out where the little screen goes. Oh yeah, how do you get the cleaning tool off of the hose? I am struggling with that too. Help please!
Thank you,
Bonnie
We have owned Hoovers steam cleaners for a long time. I think this platinum is the number 6. When one goes we just get another one. With 3 kids, 2 dogs and a cat we can’t live with out a rug shampooer. I tried it yesterday and the front room came out AWESOME. stains that were in there that i couldn’t get out with my All Terrain Steam Vac, came out. the living room wasn’t as bad but looks GREAT. And the boys room OMG, i never thought it would look as good as it does. I love that it has the two different type brushes. The only down side is that the Professional Cleaner is VERY expensive for such a small amount. I think i will have to alternate cleaning solutions.
I finally figured out how to get my cleaner together:-)
It worked great on my carpets, and I also cleaned a large rug with it, it looks like new.
The only problem I had, was when I wheeled it out to the kitchen to clean it and put it away. Somehow, dirty water poured out of the back of it on to the floor. It was a mess. I kept the tanks emptied and filled the way I was supposed to do, so I do not know why the water poured out of the back…
I normally do not write reviews but since I purchased this unit based on other’s reviews, I felt compelled to write something. I have used other residential carpet cleaners in the past but they did not do the job I was expecting. I finally came to a point where I would just renting machines at the local stores as needed to get the job done properly. I must say I was sceptical, but figured I would try this machine out as to compare it’s effectiveness. Point blank, I was very impressed by it’s performance. Not only is it quiet, I like the feel of this machine as it has some weight to it, unlike a lot of other units. In my opinion, the extra weight assists the thourough cleaning deep into the fiber of the carpets. This unit is easy to maneuver and leaves the carpet in a professional state when complete. For 1/2 the cost of a popular commercial unit, this is an easy decision and with the 6 yr warranty backing it up, I am very pleased.
Bought the Hoover Platinum from Sears. Kept it just a little over three weeks. Took it back today. Lights either were flashing needlessly OR not flashing when needed. Too much trouble to clean 7 rooms of carpet. Stanley Steamer can do the entire house for 1/2 the price of this machine and faster than I ever could think about doing it. AND they move the furniture…NOT ME. Too much to do about this machine. Not cleaning like I thought it would. Way too noisy also.
I boght the machine ~ 1 year ago. After two uses I was very pleased. As I tried to use it the third time, I could not get the brushes to spin properly. I also noticed the spot sprayer was cracked. Platinum help line is only available during the week – a bummer given this is a holiday weekend and I would like to clean before guest arrive tomorrow.
I hope they honor the warranty – will keep you posted.
Here is the real deal on this “top of the line” product. I purchased mine in February 2010. As of August 10, it has been sitting in a “Hoover Platinum Authorized” repair center. It is currently Oct 9. The problem? The Sensor for the recovery tank blinks even when the tank is empty…this shuts down any delivery of detergent effectively shutting down the machine. Hoover tech said “2 parts can be responsible for this” 1 part was sent to repair…it was NOT the culprit. Part #2…”NOT AVAILABLE AND WE CURRENTLY HAVE NO SHIP DATE” 6 weeks later…still no part. I have had it now…I blow-up Hoover customer service, get transferred to Corporate customer service..ooooh!
While I am on hold with corporate, they call the service center to verify. After 15 minutes on hold, I am summarily cut-off. I call the service center and they confirm Hoovers call and tell me that they were told that; “I am going to pull some strings and get the part to you. The manufacturing of the part is done by others and it is stuck in distribution” The service center confirmed what I knew…it was a Bullsh*t story. The service center requested that I get a new machine and Hoover refused. After over 2 months of a broken machine, Hoover is going all out to get the part for my machine in a measly 2 1/2 months!!!!
The warranty sucks. check it yourself…it does NOT cover most items that break. The circular brushes, the side brushes, ANY breakage or cracks on tanks, base or handle assembly are NOT covered.Power cord NOT covered. 6 years of crap warranty and when you get a machine like I did, that has been assembled and disassembled 6 FRIGGIN TIMES to finally diagnose the problem. It is now a veritable piece of garbage with 2 new circuit boards.
The service center is the only bright spot here…they offered to take this steaming pile of debris in trade for a Royal brand cleaner…even at a 50% loss for me, I am ecstatic.
Goodbye Hoover. Thanks for nothing.
Good luck Ken. As I stated with the circular scrub brushes…they are driven by a plastic gear and are not covered under warranty. Cost is about 50 bucks and that is doing it yourself. Beware to all on this machine…Hoover WILL NOT LOSE MONEY ON IT. They have made sure the consumer pays dearly. As for any valid warranty claim…read my post. Hoover still gets the last laugh.
I bought Hoover platinum series steam vac from Sears store in Casper WY. IT HAS A 6 YEAR WARENT. I brought it into sears repair center (they shipped it to Denver)Aug 11,10 in casper before the warranty ran out ( I thought it was only warranted for a year). Talk with Mike the manager of sears he is only offering 20% off a new platuimn one. I like the fexable ruber hoover shampoors. I don’t even like the quality of the platium shampoo. Expecial for the price my husband paid over$450. It is made with clear breakable plastic from china. Now they are saying the are unable to repair it because the base has a crack they don’t have that part in stock. It has been in repair shop more that out. Please I need to be contact by Hoover customer service. 1307-864-3155
Brian I was hoping that this Hoover model would be the one “done right”. It is maddening to hear your experience with Hoover. Is the Royal any good? It was supposed to be a good brand, but I think that they were bought out also. Also, if you haven;t already done so, you should out your review on Amazon as it is probably the most thorough experience that I’ve read so far.
Hi, nice review about Hoover F8100900. I am really trying to find more reviews about this product, as I need to ensure that this product is really a good product to buy at. But my friends keep saying that this is a good product. anyone could help, if this is really a good product.
I love the HOOVER Platinum Carpet Cleaner. It does a super job when it works!!!! The second time out (I’ve owned it two months) it died. I have owned Hoover products for nearly 40 years, and have only recently been experiencing service problems. Hoover used to mean dependability and would sell a good durable product. NO MORE!!! I do think all these problems are due to Hoover moving it’s manufacturing to Mexico..or whatever country with a cheap, inferior labor force. ONCE AGAIN, I MUST LOCATE “AN AUTHORIZED HOOVER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE” to repair my lemon. The last time I took a defective HOOVER procudt to my local “AUTHORIZED SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE’,

he told me never to buy a Hoover junk again..I should have listened to him.
I also own this hoover..it is junk as far as I am concerned..it does a good job cleaning the carpet that is when you are not having problems with it..just finished doing my carpet got to the kitchen carpet my kitchen is 10 x 10 so you know how tiny it is..I had to empty and fill the water tank container 2 times..now you know this is not right..went over it many times to try to dry it..was some job being I already did 3 other rooms..So now I have to clean it up the best I could and take it back to the hoover store which does service hoovers to see why it is leaving out this much water. 10 minutes of wash time maybe that long and then empty the containers and fill the water tank back up is not for me..the plastic is flimsy also.this is what happens when a company takes the best USA workers dumps them for cheap labor from mexico. I tried the royal steam cleaner loved it but could not push it on my carpet for some reason it was the hardest I ever worked cleaning a carpet..But I did like it way more than the hoover. The royal was really hard pushing I got this Royal first but had to take it back and get this pile of junk. I know I will be taking it back every year for repairs..and hope they can fix it.
I just used my platinum carpet machine by hoover for the first time. It worked fantastic for the first 3 rooms pulling out dirt and stains great, then…… it shorted out and literally filled the bedroom with white smoke! I heard a electrical shorting sound coming from the base and the bedroom lights started flickering, then massive white smoke. I ran to the outlet to unplug it and took it outside where it continued to smoke for a few minutes. Also the handle release broke allowing the handle not to stay up and drop to the ground, which was one of the complaints I had read about on the amazon.com reviews where I bought it for $400.00. I spoke to the authorized hoover repair shop in my area and told him which unit I was having trouble with and he just snickered and said I already have 5 in my shop for service. He told me they are riddled with problems from the handle latch, spin brush drive gear, “plastic” vac motor and the main mother board for starters, and to return mine while I still could and get my money back for this piece of garbage. He suggested the royal steam cleaner with most of the same features and nearly zero repair issues. mine is already in the box and on it’s way back to amazon. shame a company such as hoover with so many years in the floor cleaning industry can pawn this type of cheaply made crap off on people. I could understand issues after several years of use but for the money they are asking A major failure on only the1st use is just criminal. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!
I’m disappointed. To remove the roller brush, have a screwdriver handy. Good grief, what a pain and it’s not documented. The carpet was much wetter than with my old Hoover ‘All Terrain’. I was going to give my old Hoover cleaner to my sister but still had it on hand. i plugged it in and it pulled almost a 1/2 cup of water from an area that was maybe 4 X 8. Then there is the rectangular slot beside the hose. It was full of dirty water. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize this until I raised the cleaner up to remove the spin scrub brushes.
I talked to a Hoover rep. He advised me to push down on the dirty water tank before putting the lid on to make sure it ‘seats’, then after putting the lid on, push down on the front.
I blame myself for not doing enough research on this product before I bought it. I trusted the Hoover brand.
i have a hoover f7410900 carpet cleaner. the brushes stopped working. i have always cleaned them with running water, but this time i took the assembly apart. i have never seen anything so cheap, so flymsy, so poorly thought out. THE DRIVE SHAFT SPLINE FOR THE BRUSHES IS PLASTIC!. how could any ones designing a machine that scrubs carpets, weighs a lot, should be heavy duty, and last a long time ever put a square piece of plastic that looks like a child could bite it off with his teeth on this machine? square drive tools in my garage have many times the toughlness than this piece of plastic has.. the replacement brush block part is about 30 dollars. I WOULD NOT PAY 30 CENTS FOR A REPLACEMENT! i am going to the garage and look for some square stock steel and do a better job myself. if you go to buy anything with hoover on it pop off the brushes and see if they are pretty and plastic and worthless! i will always think of hoover as “plastic gears hoover”.
I am on my second steam vac. The first one broke at the back bottom. A little bit of plastic broke which helped to make the handle stand up. Hoover replaced the whole unit, which I commended them for, however I was told that beings this was a replacement, there was no longer any warranty with ???????? Guess what, it broke again. Now what?
I also have this carpet cleaner bought it on 06/2011 I have used it about twice today is 04/2012. I took it out to start cleaning yesterday when after shampooing the stairs I started to clean the carpet in the rooms, after cleaning 1 room I noticed the brushes were not spinning. I am taking it into a service center today the brush spinning motor has a short in it lets see what happends after this stay tuned. Its a shame that hoover really has gone down hill with all the posts that I see here. I owned a previous model of the upright cleaner I owned for over 12 years. with 1 problem the bearings in the motor broke and froze up the machine but hoover fixed this under warranty with no problems. I am waiting to see about this one.
